My Happy Mind

At Salterhebble, we have embedded the My Happy Mind programme within our curriculum. The whole school programme is grounded in science and dedicated to building positive mental wellbeing. My Happy Mind helps our pupils understand how their brains work and creates a culture that helps to build children's resilience, confidence, and self-esteem. My Happy Mind also teaches our pupils how to self-regulate and manage their emotions in stressful times, allowing them to be their very best selves!

Over an academic year, the following My Happy Mind modules are taught within each year group:

Ready To Shine: (EYFS class only) A structured transition series designed to help our new starter pupils be emotionally and practically prepared for starting school.

Meet Your Brain: Understanding how your brain works and how to ensure we look after it so that we can manage our emotions and be at our best. Growth mindset is a key part of this too.

My Happy Mind Places: Understanding emotions and developing effective self-regulation strategies.

Celebrate: Understanding your unique Character Strengths and learning to celebrate them. This is a fantastic module for building self-esteem.

Appreciate: Understanding why gratitude matters and how you can develop gratitude as a habit. Gratitude is key to well-being and resilience and we're all about making it a lifelong strategy!

Relate: Understanding why positive relationships matter and how to build them. We're focused on the building blocks of good relationships and friendships.

Engage: Understanding how to set meaningful goals that matter and how to stay resilient in times of challenge. This module is all about building self-esteem and resilience too.

Salterhebble My Happy Mind Pupil Voice

AH Year 1:

When you feel scared, A is all alone because H and P are asleep.

RW Year 3:

I have learnt that a character strength is a thing that is love and kindness or bravery and honesty, exploring and learning.

EC Year 3:

It is important t have an attitude to gratitude. I am grateful for my mum because she drives me to school every day.

CT Year 5:

Breathing can help me calm down when the amygdala puts me in fight, flight or freeze. We don’t respond to the same things. I also learnt doing stuff over and over again creates neural pathways, which means we always remember and knowing it becomes habit like writing our name.

VH Year 5:

What appreciate means and how it works. It has helped me learn how to appreciate others, experiences and myself. It also taught me when I’m feeling down, if I think of something I appreciate, that releases dopamine that makes me feel happier than before.

AN Year 6:

Happy Mind has taught me how to handle my emotions and how my brain works. It makes me a lot more positive and calm. I know to do happy breathing when my amygdala takes over my hippocampus and prefrontal cortex fall asleep.
