22 March 2024 (by Brier Ambler-Danyluk (Brier Ambler-Danyluk))

EYFS:

This week, we have been applying our phonic knowledge and high frequency words in making a Wanted poster for the runaway Gingerbread man, re-telling the story and writing a letter from the little pigs to mummy pig. We have celebrated our literacy topic of traditional tales by baking gingerbread men and getting a delivery of some magic beans! In maths, we have been learning about number bonds to 10, exploring how different parts can make a whole of 10. In topic, we have been learning about the importance of Easter, who it is celebrated by and how it is celebrated. We created some Easter crafts and went on an Easter egg hunt.

Year 1:

Our English work has been based on the story Chicken Licken. The children have retold the story in their own words. In Maths we have been leaning about mass and capacity. In RE we have continued to learn about the Christian Easter Story. We have also talked about the Islamic month of Ramadan and some of our classmates shared their own experiences of Ramadan with the class. Geography has been the main focus of our afternoons. We used Google Maps to help us to investigate our local area and then used what we had seen to create our own maps. On Thursday, we had a fabulous day out in Hebden Bridge. After travelling by train, we looked at the urban and rural features and experienced a canal boat trip. We used what we had learnt on our trip to make comparisons between Salterhebble and Hebden Bridge and were able to answer our enquiry question ‘Are all areas of Halifax the same?’.

Year 2:

This week, we went on a walk to visit our local landmark Wainhouse Tower! We took the iPads and captured lots of photographs ready to sketch as well as drawing a map using signs for the route. In maths, we have focussed on our two times table and dividing by 2, we even used TT rockstars to time our fluency. Our George's marvellous medicine stories are complete, and our plot twists were just fantastic!

Year 3:

Another busy week rehearsing and performing our 'Plastic Pirates' show to the school, preparing for the final show to parents and carers. We have enjoyed learning about volcanoes in geography, finding out about how they form and exploring the different parts of a volcano. The children worked in pairs on the laptops, using the internet to find out facts about the world’s largest volcano, Mauna Loa in Hawaii.  In RE, we concluded the Easter story and designed Easter eggs, replicating the resurrection of Jesus. We also made Easter cards with a poem inside.

Year 4:

We have had a very busy week in year 4! We performed a dress rehearsal to the whole school… it went extremely well! Then, we finished with two amazing performances to families! The children should be incredibly proud of themselves, and they put on an amazing show! In and amongst the performance, we have been completing assessments within maths, reading, spelling, punctuation and grammar.

Year 5:

In Class 5, we continued to understand the Highwayman (by Alfred Noyes) in greater depth; we analysed the character Tim the Ostler before writing a witness statement on his behalf, giving him an opportunity to explain his actions from the poem. We also compared the characters of Tim and the Highwayman, and why Noyes intended to make Tim the antagonist. In Maths we learnt about perimeter and area of polygons, and how to calculate missing lengths from a given area or perimeter. We learnt about Biomes in Geography, researching the tundra, investigating which biomes best supports vegetation growth and threats to biomes.

Year 6:

In English, the children have written magazine articles about the fictional planet of ‘Pandora’, thinking carefully about their purpose and audience and choosing appropriate language, grammar and layout devices to suit their piece of writing. In Maths, we have learnt to interpret pie charts, using both fractions and percentages, before revisiting how to use protractors to measure angles. In our ‘Rivers’ topic in Geography, the children have created fact files about major rivers of the world and produced a map to show the locations of these rivers; we then explored the importance of the River Nile to people in Egypt, learning about the different methods of irrigation, before discussing the advantages and disadvantages of the building of the Aswan High Dam on the Nile. In Music, the children have been composing their own melodies on glockenspiels and have used notation to record their pieces of music.
