 School Learning
Week beginning: 15/04/2024
EYFS:
This week we have been reading The Bad-Tempered Ladybird. We have been focussing on using finger spaces and correct letter formation writing a speech bubble for one of the characters from the story. In maths, we have been learning about 3D shapes and their properties. We have thought carefully about flat faces and curved surfaces on the shape. In topic, we have been learning about the lifecycle of a caterpillar and observing our caterpillars in class. We have been learning about micro habitats for minibeasts, visiting the school field and collecting grass, twigs, stones and moss to create our own micro habitat. We will look inside in a week to see which minibeasts have visited. To end the week we enjoyed an Eid party - it was great fun!
Year 1:
We have been learning about the meaning of equal, adding equal numbers and making arrays. Our English work has been based upon The Three Billy Goats Gruff. We created a storyboard to retell the story before creating our own character to live under the bridge and then retelling the story using our own character. Our Science work has been focussing on the seasons. We have observed the changes that occur in Spring and Summer and have made comparisons between the weather that we observed in Autumn and the weather that we have experienced now that it is spring. We continue to work hard to use our knowledge of phonics across all areas of the curriculum and have started to write dictated sentences which we have begun to edit more independently.
Year 2:
Year 2 had a great time on their school trip to Yorkshire Wildlife Park where we attended a workshop learning all about habitats! We saw lots of different animals from tigers to polar bears! We even got to hold snails and a giant cockroach called Colin. It was the best day ever!
Year 3:
This week we have started to read the ‘Abominables’ by Eva Ibbotson. We began by inferring what the story could be about from the front cover, before reading the blurb to find out more. We drew and labelled our own Yeti using powerful adjectives/phrases from the story. In maths, we have started our new unit on measuring capacity and volume in litres and millilitres, working on problem solving and reasoning tasks. In science we have explored materials to identify if they are opaque, transparent, or translucent, deciding which were best for different purposes. We explored how shadows are formed and investigated how the size and shape of shadows change with distance. We have also been learning the months of the year in French and playing the recorder in music to ‘He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands’.
Year 4:
This week, we have begun reading Firework Maker’s Daughter in English. We explored using inference to explain characters thoughts, feelings, and emotions. We spent time focusing on standard English writing and key rules we need to follow to ensure that we write in standard English. We then finished with exploring the key features of instructional writing and then planned and wrote our own instructions on how to make a firework. In maths, we have continued to explore decimals looking at tenths on place value charts and number lines. We then looked at dividing a 1-digit number by 10 and a 2-digit number by 10. In science, we continue looking at electricity. We explored identifying if a bulb will light up in a circuit and recognising common conductors and insulators.
Year 5:
In Class 5, we continued to learn about the Titanic by completing a reading comprehension activity on it, planning and drafting our sea poem. We will check our poem includes use of imagery and evokes emotion in the reader. In Maths we learnt to classify, measure and draw (using a protractor), and calculate angles in a straight line and around a point. We learnt about the life cycles of mammals, birds, amphibians and insects in science, investigating links to gestation, size and life expectancy of mammals.
Year 6:
In Maths, we have been learning to calculate missing angles in triangles (including isosceles triangles) and to recognise that vertically opposite angles are equal; we have then used these skills to solve angle problems. In English, the children have been learning to recognise standard and non-standard English; they then created radio adverts for ‘Shady Oaks’ retirement village before exploring the language features of persuasive brochures. In Science, we have learnt about how exercise keeps our heart healthy as well as how to eat healthily. In French, we have learnt about different types of weather as well as the compass points while in P.E. we enjoyed our first Cricket lesson.
