School Learning
Week beginning: 22/04/2024
EYFS:
This week we have been reading Tad by Benji Davies. We thought about how Tad might have felt in the pond all on her own. The children used fantastic vocabulary such as disappointed, amazed and excited. We then wrote a letter to Tad using finger spaces and correct letter formation - we thought about what we would say to Tad to make her feel better. In maths, we have been learning about complex patterns - we looked at what a pattern is. The children found it tricky when I changed more than one factor, this meant we had to look carefully at the pattern before we copied or continued it. In topic, we have been learning about the lifecycle of a frog. We have been very lucky to have live frogspawn and tadpoles in the class to help us see how they grow and change. We have learnt about the artist Wassily Kandinksky - looking at his spiral painting.
Year 1:
We have had a very exciting week in Year 1! As an introduction to our History Topic about Mary Anning, we viewed some CCTV footage which showed a dinosaur in the school grounds. We went to investigate this and found a nest with some eggs. We have put the eggs in water to see if they will hatch. Our English work has been based on The Tiger Who Came to Tea. The children have retold the story, making changes to a character. In Maths we have been working on doubling and making equal groups. We have also used Purple Mash to help us to write an algorithm for an activity which was great fun!
Year 2:
This week in literacy, we have read the book, The Story Machine. We looked at the front cover to see if we could make predictions about the story. Then, once we had read the book, we explored what a typewriter was and how they worked so we could write a description of one for Tiny! In maths, we have been looking at length and height, comparing different objects using sentences like, ‘The rubber is 6cm shorter than the whiteboard pen.’ Our blocking is design and technology and we have been looking at wheels and axles, designing our own wheeled product to make next week!
Year 3:
We have been exploring newspapers and their features, finding the 5w's in articles - What? Why? Where?
When? Who? We also completed our maths unit by adding and subtracting capacities and volumes.
We experienced 'History coming to life' through our Egyptian and Stone Age workshop…see the fun we had on the Salterhebble Facebook page! In PSHE we have been learning how to look after our teeth including visits to the dentist and the process of brushing our teeth. PE has focused on ball handling skills preparing for Dodgeball.
Year 4:
We have continued to explore the book, The Firework Maker’s Daughter. We designed our own fireworks and then wrote instructions to go along with how to make the firework. The children thought about making sure they used adverbs, fronted adverbials, strong adjectives, paragraphs for each individual step and making sure they were very clear and precise with their steps. In maths, we are exploring decimals. We have been looking at making wholes with both tenths and hundredths. We have started our final history topic, exploring the Roman army and researching why their army was so good.
Year 5:
We started to learn about Position and Direction in Maths, revisiting how to read and plot coordinates in the first quadrant, before completing reasoning and problem solving activities. In English, we started to read Beowulf considering its significance in English Literature and answering comprehension questions on the first chapter. We then practised creating suspense in writing by creating a short piece of writing in which Beowulf and his thanes await the arrival of Grendel in the Mead Hall in Heorot. We started to learn about Halifax in History by comparing maps (1907, 1933 and 1977) and identifying similarities and differences with modern Halifax.
Year 6:
In English, the children have planned and written persuasive brochures for ‘Shady Oaks’ Retirement Village, incorporating a wide variety of persuasive language features and thinking carefully about the purpose and audience of their writing. In Maths, we have continued our unit on ‘Shape’ by calculating missing angles in different polygons, using our understanding of radius and diameter to solve circle problems, and exploring the nets of 3D shapes. In History, we have started our unit on Early Islamic Civilisation by comparing the cities of Baghdad and London in the year 900AD, exploring the significance of the House of Wisdom, and examining different sources of evidence to find out how historians know about this time period. In French, the children have written about the weather in different French cities while in Computing the children have used the 2Quiz program in Purple Mash to create their own quizzes based on the Year 6 Science curriculum.
